Basketball Coaching Tips

"I would spend almost as much time planning a practice as conducting it. Everything was planned out each day" -- John Wooden

1:  Effective coaches plan their practices in advance!  Know what drills you want to run and for how long you want to run them (but be ready to flex if a drill is taking longer to teach or proves to be especially effective).
2:  Avoid TALKING about drills - demonstrate the drill, tell them what you are trying to train, correct as they go!
3:  Provide frequent water breaks, but make sure they are SHORT!  The social element of being on a team is important, but you only have a few hours a week with your team, and if left without time constraints, your team will likely extend their water breaks!
4:  Alternate high-intensity drills with lower-intensity drills to keep the girls engaged and fresh.
5:  Basketball is supposed to be fun!   Starting or Ending a practice with shooting games (like lightning) can be a great way to wrap things up.
6:  Keep parents updated on what you are trying to teach!
